Charl van Zyl (Founder & CEO) studied International Marketing Management, and thereafter he worked in the corporate business environment for 13 years. He focused on imports, product development, marketing research, exports, shipping, export marketing and sales as well as foreign exchange. He also developed his company’s interest and brand to the export market successfully. In 2002 Charl won Standard Bank’s prestigious award on behalf of his company as Exporter of the year. After Charl resigned in 2007 from this company he started his own business.
Charl van Zyl has more than 28 years of international business experience and has been specializing for the last 14 years in the Light Steel Frame Industry. He started his own company in South Africa in 2007 beginning with delivering roof truss systems to the local market. Within 8 months his business became the largest LGS roof truss business in the province. After specializing in LSF roof truss systems, Charl developed his business to residential and commercial building projects with much success.
In 2011 Charl began a master franchise business, franchising LSF businesses in South Africa. The master franchisor then provided assistance and guidance to the franchisees and personally assisted them in setting up their businesses to meet market needs. The following divisions were formed:
- structural engineering,
- detail shop drawings,
- real estate,
- property development,
- project management,
- product development research,
- quantity surveying,
- sales & marketing and
- graphic design services
These divisions were created to ensure their on-going success in the industry. His company has become the largest LSFB Company in Africa and therefore one of the biggest LGS companies in the world though the franchise set-up. In 2014 his company won the South African Franchisees Ass. FASA FRANCHISOR OF THE YEAR 2014 & Sanlam & Business Partners Emerging Business Entrepreneur 2013 & Southern African Institute of Steel Construction LSFB category winner 2014.
In February 2016 Charl sold the business to embark on a new journey to service as a Consultant to the light steel framing industry. In a very short space of time the consulting business proved to be extremely successful but with one shortfall; existing and new clients requested that aside from consultation they needed him to build the projects under his supervision and RANCOR was created to facilitate this need. Charl will bring with him the experience of more than 700+ individual projects in LSF, where he has been involved in all aspects of design, project management, pre-planning, and the construction of projects – always with a hands-on approach to projects, leading to successful completion.
Rancor was awarded a prestigious award at the annual award ceremony in 2018 from the South African Institute of steel construction in 2018 for special commendation for the light steel frame industry in regards to the Knysna region. The award was awarded on the basis of the introduction of light steel frame and ongoing support and developing the Knysna region with high quality projects, excellent support systems and ongoing customer service.
Charl has first hand experience in raising start-up capital for new businesses, because of his entrepreneurial background. Therefore, the idea of Vertex was formulated. Vertex was founded with the vision to serve the needs of both entrepreneurs and public investors, in providing an alternative investment vehicle by which they could gain access to the prestigious and elusive world of capital investing.

Why successful startups choose Vertex:
As entrepreneurs ourselves, we know what it’s like to start a business and raise the capital necessary to be successful. We understand that the best ideas are rarely immediately obvious, and that unconventional wisdom can’t be measured by formulas, or its benefits be captured in a spreadsheet.
That’s why our broad portfolio is as diverse as the innovative entrepreneurs we back. With an investor mindset and an experienced team and network, Vertex continually strives to be highly responsive, creative and flexible in addressing each portfolio company’s unique capital requirements.
How does Vertex debt compare to traditional bank lending?
Vertex debt is designed to be less restrictive, and far more customizable to your company’s unique needs than commercial bank financing. Debt doesn’t require that you deposit your operating account cash balances as collateral to your loans, and there are no regulatory required restrictive covenants. Debt provides the ability to work through your growth challenges and restructure loans, unlike that of a regulated bank entity.
What kind of capital funding is promoted?
Vertex is promoting a type of alternative debt financing to traditional commercial banks, and offers the ability to customize financing needs to meet specific company requirements without commercial bank regulatory mandates. Vertex debt is complimentary to your existing venture capital equity investments and provides lower costs growth capital to further extend your runway to success. It is typically used to fund working capital, operating expenses, and growth initiatives of capital and private equity-backed companies. Unlike typical traditional bank lending.
